This is 52 BC. Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the richest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis of one million people and the center of a vast kingdom. The republic was founded on the principles of common power and fierce personal competition, which never allowed anyone to take absolute control of it.
Gaius Julius Caesar (Ciarn Hinds, Munich) concludes a year-long campaign to conquer Gaul. During the process of conquest, he became rich and honed a deadly force led by the 13th Legion, a group of men willing to obey all his commandments. The two members of the Fighting Thirteenth series, Lucious Vorenus (Kevin McKidd, Kingdom of Heaven) and Titus Bottle (Ray Stevenson, King Arthur), are the protagonists of the series.
Vorenus was a Conscientious Soldier and the father of the family. The people and Caesar himself respected him. The bottle is a female recruiter who loves to drink. His tough fighting skills and rebellious nature also made him popular. The problematic relationship between Vorenus and Bottle begins when circumstances force them to work together in a very important task for Caesar.
In Rome, Casesar’s niece Atia (Polly Walker, Sliver) is a very ambitious and cunning player among the Roman nobility. Together with Caesar’s lover Servilla, we have two women who compete with all the men of the kingdom in cunning and cruelty. The son of Atia (and the future Roman emperor) Octavian (Max Pirkis, champion and master: The Far Side of the World) is a very skilled teenager with an exceptional understanding of Roman politics.
Caesar’s main competitors are Brutus (Tobias Menzies, The Lowdown) and Pompey Magnus (Kenneth Cranham, Layer Cake). Pompey was consul in Rome with Caesar. The battle between Caesar and Pompeus was originally of will and understanding. He finally got to the sword. Brutus’ relationship with Caesar was much more complex. Caesar needed Brutus and his influential family to legitimize his regime, but Brutus was a Republican who resented Caesar’s imperialist goals. Their father and daughter were a major source of internal conflict for the two.
Caesar’s coup and its aftermath in Rome are the backdrop to all character conflicts. Politics, personal competitions, friendships, and some very odipal relationships are combined with historical facts to tell the unique story of Rome as one of its most important periods. Rest assured, I’m just scratching the surface here. There are many characters and story lines in this vast story that I left for viewers to discover.
